Larian’s journey from Belgian garage to Baldur’s Gate 3

Humble Beginnings: Swen Vincke’s 90s Indie Roots

Larian Studios was founded in 1996 in Ghent, Belgium, by visionary designer Swen Vincke, starting as a tiny team crafting ambitious RPGs on shoestring budgets. Early experiments like the unreleased The Lady, the Mage and the Knight laid groundwork for reactive storytelling, while survival title The L.E.D. Wars (1997) kept the lights on with its quick real-time strategy gameplay.

Through the 2000s, Larian balanced passion projects with kid-friendly edutainment like Ketnet Kick and Monkey Tales, funding core RPG development amid financial tightropes.

Divinity Era: Building a Cult RPG Legacy (2002-2012)

Larian’s breakthrough arrived with Divine Divinity (2002), an isometric action-RPG blending Diablo loot with Ultima freedom, earning cult status and RPG awards despite a forced generic title. Beyond Divinity (2004) expanded the world but mixed reviews due to balance issues.

The series evolved with Divinity II: Ego Draconis (2009), The Dragon Knight Saga (2010), and Developer’s Cut (2012), introducing dragon transformations and open-world reactivity that honed Larian’s signature player agency.

Crowdfunding Triumph: Original Sin Redefines CRPGs (2013-2017)

Kickstarter revolutionized Larian with Divinity: Original Sin (2014), raising funds and feedback for turn-based co-op mastery, winning 150+ awards including Best Multiplayer BAFTA. Enhanced Edition (2015) polished it for consoles.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 (2017) exploded with a 93 Metacritic, deeper writing, 4-player co-op, and 160+ accolades, cementing Larian as RPG elite while expanding studios to Quebec, Dublin, and beyond.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Record-Breaking GOTY Juggernaut (2020-2023)

Partnering with Wizards of the Coast, Larian delivered Baldur’s Gate 3 in Early Access (2020), full release (2023) on PC/PS5/Xbox, selling 20M+ copies worldwide and generating €427M revenue with ~$270M profit.

BG3 swept Game of the Year at Golden Joysticks, The Game Awards 2023, D.I.C.E., GDCA, BAFTA (5 wins incl. Narrative/Music), plus Best Community Support at TGA 2024/2025, Hugo Awards, and 32+ total honors for story, design, and performances.

TGA 2025 Bombshell: Divinity – Larian’s Biggest RPG Yet

At The Game Awards 2025, Larian unveiled Divinity, a horrifying, blood-soaked teaser promising their “most ambitious title” – larger than BG3 with unprecedented breadth/depth. Swen Vincke calls it the “Divinity we’ve always wanted,” blending series continuity with fresh intimacy; no gameplay/release yet, but expect turn-based RPG evolution bigger/darker than ever.

Larian’s journey from Belgian garage to 1,200-employee titan proves persistence in player-driven RPGs pays off massively.
