LittleBigPlanet — handcrafted whimsy, “Play‑Create‑Share,” and a platformer that turned players into designers

Presentation

LittleBigPlanet introduces Sackboy to a cardboard‑and‑felt universe where every level looks built from craft materials, with physics‑based 2.5D platforming and Stephen Fry’s narration giving the whole experience a storybook charm. The visual “DIY” aesthetic is mirrored in the tools: almost everything seen in the story mode can be rebuilt in Create mode, making the authored campaign feel like a tutorial for your own inventions.

Story

The story mode spans eight themed regions—Gardens, Savannah, Wedding, Canyons, Metropolis, Islands, Temples, and Wilderness—where Sackboy helps various Creator Curators solve their local problems. All threads converge on the Collector, a rogue Creator Curator who has been stealing everyone’s creations; after beating his machines and freeing the kidnapped inhabitants, Sackboy learns he was simply lonely, and the curators befriend him to “bring sharing back to LittleBigPlanet.”

Systems, length, and co‑op

  • Play‑Create‑Share. A full physics toolkit, logic switches, and a robust level editor allow players to build and share stages, vehicles, and contraptions; until the 2021 server shutdown, millions of user levels extended the game’s life far beyond the campaign.

  • Co‑op platforming. Up to four players can play locally or (formerly) online, solving co‑op puzzles, competing in races, and co‑creating levels in real time, with tethered camera keeping everyone on‑screen.

  • Length. A straightforward run through the story typically takes 8–10 hours; chasing 100% prize bubbles, ace runs (no deaths), and full Create/online time can easily push playtime into dozens of hours.
