Super Mario Galaxy — orbital platforming, orchestral wonder, and a gravity-bending reinvention of 3D Mario

Presentation

Super Mario Galaxy reimagines 3D platforming as a tour of tiny planetoids, each with bespoke gravity fields, surface shapes, and micro‑gimmicks that turn simple jumps into constant novelty and spectacle. The Comet Observatory hub, Rosalina’s storybook, and a fully orchestrated score give the adventure a cosmic, almost wistful tone that complements the series’ trademark playfulness.

Story

Bowser abducts Princess Peach and uses Grand Stars to power a galaxy‑sized reactor, prompting Mario to ally with Rosalina and the Lumas aboard the Comet Observatory to recover Power Stars and reach the Center of the Universe. After defeating Bowser and surviving a universe‑shattering collapse, Mario, Peach, Rosalina, and the Lumas witness a cosmic rebirth before awakening back in the Mushroom Kingdom, with Rosalina promising to watch over them among the stars.

Systems and structure

  • Gravity and level design. Spherical worlds, shifting axes, and launch stars let levels twist, loop, and reorient the camera without disorienting the player, keeping routes readable yet surprising.

  • Power‑ups and variety. Bee, Boo, Spring, and Fire/Ice Mario forms, plus shifting mission objectives, ensure that collecting each Star feels distinct across galaxies and comets.

  • Assist co‑op. A second player can use a Wii Remote pointer to gather Star Bits and briefly stun enemies, offering lightweight couch co‑op without disrupting the core platforming.

Length and co‑op

Most players need around 13–15 hours to reach the main ending with 60 Stars, while collecting all 120 Stars with Mario typically brings playtime to roughly 30–40 hours. A full 100% file—120 Stars as Mario, 120 as Luigi, plus the Grand Finale Galaxy as both—can reach 40–60+ hours depending on skill and thoroughness.

Critics’ scores

  • Metacritic — 97/100 (Wii), “universal acclaim,” among the highest‑rated games ever.

  • IGN — 9.7/10; calls it “spectacularly amazing in every imaginable aspect,” praising level design, controls, and soundtrack.

  • Eurogamer — 10/10; lauds constant invention and execution.

  • Edge — 10/10; positions it as a new benchmark for 3D platformers (reported in critic round‑ups).

  • GameSpot — 9.5/10; highlights creativity and polish across galaxies.

  • Famitsu — 38/40; one of the strongest Wii-era import scores.

  • OpenCritic (modern Galaxy 1+2 package) — 87/100 average, with individual write‑ups reaffirming the original’s classic status.
